C. Allan Shaffer

C. Allan Shaffer, devoted husband, son, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and friend passed away Thursday March 4, 2021.  Allan was a lifelong resident of North, West and East Springfield, PA.  Allan was born July 11, 1931 in Erie County and was the son of the late Claude H and Dorothy E (Auerbach) Shaffer.  Allan was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years Hazel Carolyn (Umstead) Shaffer whom he married on July 6, 1957 and his sister, Shirley J (Shaffer) Rickard.  Allan is survived by his sister, Melisse "Lisa" L (Shaffer) Miles of Tucson, AZ, his daughter, Sherri (Shaffer) Carr and her husband, Wayne Carr, of Valparaiso, IN, his sons, Stephen Shaffer of Youngstown, OH and Eric Shaffer of Sterling, VA.  Allan has four grandchildren who are married and blessed him with 8 Great Grandchildren all living in the Midwest.
Allan graduated from West Springfield High School and immediately entered the US Navy at age 18.  Upon discharge from the Navy, Allan held numerous jobs which led to his hiring onto the Bessemer & Lake Erie (B & LE) Railroad.  Allan met the love of his life, Carolyn, whom he married on July 6, 1957.  Allan retired in 1986 with over 30 years of service as a B& LE Engineer.

Allan was a 50 year member of Lodge #304 F & AM in Albion.  He was proud to have other men in his life members of Lodge #304 as well including his son Stephen Shaffer
Allan enjoyed living near Lake Erie where he became a proficient swimmer.  As a teenager Allan saved a swimmer from drowning and earned the American Red Cross Life Saving Award.  He enjoyed boating, traveling with his wife and spending time in Tucson, AZ.  He was an avid gardener, enjoyed hunting, playing cards and anything mechanical.  He was a problem solver and a mechanical wizard who could repair just about anything.
He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.  Allan made a difference in the life of so many others in so many ways.  He made sure his Family knew how special they each were as he had the uncanny ability to eloquently express how he loved them.  He leaves a wonderful legacy of how honesty, hard work, integrity, and a sense of compassion for others can enrich one's life and so many others.
