Mary Jane Lahnan

June 9, 1934 — November 26, 2017

Mary Jane Lahnan, age 83, currently residing at The Lantern at Saybrook in Ashtabula, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, November 26, 2017 after a long illness.

She was born in Girard, Pa. on June 9, 1934, the daughter of the late Merle and Bessie (Hogoboom) Pierce.  She graduated from the West Springfield High School and met her husband, Lawrence “Larry” Lahnan whom she married on January 19, 1954.   They worked together for 16 years at the Astatic Corporation in Conneaut, Ohio.  They enjoyed life to the fullest with lots of love and interesting turns.  Mary Jane was always by her husband’s side doing something.  She enjoyed bowling and dancing especially on the Bowling League that the Astatic Corporation sponsored every year.  She enjoyed going out to her Wednesday night dinners with the Girls at the “Ranch” restaurant that used to be between Girard and Fairview on Rt. 20.  (In fact, the building is still there today.)

Mary Jane enjoyed traveling and living in Europe when Larry had a sales office in Frankfurt.  She helped in the office, typed and sent telexes and was always ready to go to lunch with visitors and clients.

Each weekend brought a new adventure and she was fearless in her quest for fun and excitement.  Often when Larry spent a few days visiting the factory in Ireland, she would hop in her German stick shift sedan and head for the Autobahn which had no speed limit for cars.  (Many drove 200 KPH or more).  She usually found her way to Heidelberg; 100 Km South, to visit friends at the U.S. Army Base.

They loved touring the famous old cathedrals of Europe.  A favorite was the “Minster of ULM” which dates back to the Gothic Era and has the highest church steeple in the world.  She would climb the 768 ancient stone circular steps leading to the spire, with outlook openings at every level, then lean over the top parapet to view the vast panorama below.

Besides her parents, Mary Jane is preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Bennett Daub, and a Great-Granddaughter, Abigail Lahnan.

She is survived by her husband of almost 64 years and three children:   Cathy  (Tim) Shumake  of Midland, MI; Larry (Tess) Lahnan of Aurora, OH;  and Cindy Deutsch of East Springfield, PA; and a sister, Doris L. Daub of Conneaut, OH and seven Grandchildren:  Keli McMahon, Brett Bartlett, Patrick (Deanna) Lahnan, Amanda (Tony) Fariello, Derek (Kristin) Deutsch, Danny (Nicole) Deutsch, and Casey Deutsch and 10 Great-Grandchildren:  Haylee, Abigail, Gram, Nash, Mia, Vinnie, Kaylin, Dakota, Ethan, and Brooklyn.

“The family gives thanks to the nurses, aids and staff of the “Lantern of Saybrook” who gave so much love and compassion to Mary Jane during her 17 month stay and to the Hospice of Western Reserve for their loving care during her final days.”
