Florence E. English, known to many as “Flossie”, age 90 of East Springfield, Pa. went home to be with the lord on Monday night, June 3, 2024 at the Saint Mary’s at Asbury Ridge Nursing Home where she had been staying for a short while.
Flossie was born on November 10, 1933, the daughter of the late Noel Calvin and Ethel Margaret (Schreckingos) Bateman in Cranesville, Pa. She attended the Cranesville School and graduated from the Albion Area School in 1951. While Flossie was in high school, she was very instrumental playing the Trumpet. She was noted to play so well, that she was excused from school on many occasions to play “Taps” at many military funerals. After high school, she worked at the Lawrence’s Meat Market in Albion and also took some typing and clerical classes which enabled her to work at the Girard State Police Barracks as a Clerk Typist 2. She retired from the police barracks in 1999 after 19 years of service.
Flossie was a member of the West Springfield United Methodist Church (currently known as the West Springfield Community Church). She was a member of the Parent-Teacher’s Association (PTA), Springfield Mother’s Club, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #22 – Albion, baked pies for the local Springfield Volunteer Fire Dept. annual carnivals for many years, helped with the church chicken dinners. She was famous for making her rippled crocheted afagans, and hand-made Christmas bulbs. She was also a big fan of the Pittsburgh sports teams – the Pirates and the Penguins. She enjoyed watching wildlife around her house, and sewing. She liked to make clothes.
Besides her parents, Flossie was preceded in death by her three brothers: Archie, Chuck, and Melvin.
She will be greatly missed by her family, which includes her four children: Roger (Debbie) English, Andy English, Loreen (Ken) Lasher, and Dianne Snow; her grandchildren, Steven (Laura) English, Stephanie (Cody) Furr, Megan (Cris) Tillery, Jessica (Steven) Church, Benjamin Snow (Peter Burns), Christina (Adam) Sprague; great grandchildren, Grace, Ethan, Madison, Amelia and JC; also, several nieces and nephews and her best friend, Carol Everden.
Flossie’s wishes were to be donated to Science. Services will be held privately and burial will be held at Hope Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
