Clyde H. Zappitella
Clyde H. Zappitella, age 86 formerly from West Springfield, died Tuesday morning, June 4, 2024 at the PA Soldiers and Sailors Home in Erie where he had recently been residing.
Clyde was born on August 3, 1937 in Conneaut, Ohio, the son of the late Carmine and Cora M. (Golden) Zappitella.
Clyde graduated from the Conneaut High School and went directly into the U.S. Army where he earned the rank of Sargent and served his country proudly. Clyde worked for many years at several of the Ashtabula Chemical Plants and then worked at the Conrail Railroad as a breakman later becoming a train engineer. He retired after several years at the PA Sailors and Soldiers Home where he worked as a maintenance engineer on the whole grounds.
When Clyde was not working, he enjoyed hunting, coin collecting, antique shopping and portraying the professional yard saler. He trained and loved horses. His two favorite horses were, Scout and Honey. He attended both the West Springfield Methodist Church and the Federated Church.
Besides his parents, Clyde was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Clyde is survived by six children. Kenneth (Katherine) of East Springfield, Marci of Albion, Lisa of Georgetown, S.C., Julia Bird of North Springfield, Jennifer of Lake City, and Joseph Zappitella of Albion. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
No calling hours will be observed for Clyde as were his wishes. Burial will be private at Springfield Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Jean Evans Thompson Funeral Home, East Springfield, Pa., www.jeanevansthompsonfh.com.
